As 2022 comes to an end we, would love to share some of its highlights with our Summer Recap Series. If you are wondering what our teens get up to during the summer adventures, then you are in luck! Over the next few weeks, we will be looking back on all the adventures from this summer. All the teens had so much fun, learned and practiced new skills, and created memories to last a lifetime. None of this would be possible without the support of our community, so as always, we are grateful for you!
Summer Recap #1: Outdoor 201
This summer, our teens had a great time participating in GSTA’s 2nd annual Outdoor 201 adventure in North Carolina! They had a blast conducting wilderness first responder training on the trails of the Nantahala National Forest and completing swiftwater rescue exercises in the Nantahala River. Throughout the week, the teens were given real-life scenarios to put into practice the skills that they learned. These ranged from treating and evacuating people with mock injuries and illnesses on the trail, to rigging rope belay systems in the river to rescue “distressed” swimmers.

The highlight of the week was the culminating multi-stage scenario where teens had to locate, treat, and safely evacuate multiple “injured” people from trails in the North Carolina backcountry, using only the resources that were available to them at the time. Our teens excelled at every challenge they were given and enjoyed every second of it. We are proud to say that everyone earned their American Red Cross Wilderness First Aid and American Canoe Association Swiftwater Rescue certifications. Stay tuned to hear about the Advanced Open Water and Adventure Scuba trip next!
